Nutrition & Chiropractic Care

The Benefits of Good Nutrition With Chiropractic Care.

What is the Connection Between Nutrition & Chiropractic Care?

Everyone knows that the organic, non-GMO, and unprocessed foods are best. But, did you know that none of that matters if you don’t have an optimally functioning nervous system? This is where our chiropractic care will help you!

Disrupted Nervous System, Disrupted Diet

Your nervous system influences every single part of your body, especially your digestion. When the nervous system is not balanced and experiencing disruptions, chances are that no matter how nutritious your meal is, the nutrients that your body needs won’t be properly stored, broken down or even entirely used. But, why?

The nervous system is responsible for telling your body what it needs to do with its fuel. If a disturbance is present, the messages sent between your brain and body will go unread.

Family First Chiropractic Center’s Nutrition Expert, Katie Vigesaa, RD

Hi! I’m Katie Vigesaa, and I am a registered dietitian (RD) with a simple philosophy: nutrition can help. I am an advocate of the real food movement and love teaching my class members and clients the power of real food eating. I graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 2009. From there, I was selected to be part of Concordia’s Dietetic Internship program. I passed my RD exam in 2010 and have been a practicing dietitian ever since.

The nutrition counseling process is incredibly rewarding; I have helped people with a variety of conditions including autoimmune diseases, sleep problems, fibromyalgia, skin conditions, mood disorders, eating disorders, metabolism imbalances and more. I never tire of watching my clients start to thrive once they change the way they are eating. Increased energy, decreased aches and pains, bright moods, and of course weight loss when needed are all benefits of changing your food. If you want to see how nutrition can help heal your health, all while learning how to eat real foods, I can help.

herniated disc

Herniated Disc & Chiropractic Care

How Can Chiropractic Services Help With A Herniated Disc?

Herniated Discs Are One of the Top Causes of Pain We Treat Patients for.

What is a Herniated Disc?

herniated discThe Mayo Clinic refers to a herniated disc as a “problem with one of the rubbery cushions (disks) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack up to make your spine. A herniated disk can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg.”

The most common symptoms of a herniated disc include but are not limited to:

  • Arm or Leg Pain – depending on where the disc herniated, you will feel pain in your arms or in your legs.
  • Numbness or Tingling – the majority of people with a herniated disc often feel numbness or tingling in the body part served by the affected nerves.
  • Weakness – the muscles that are served by the affected nerves often experience weakness.

How Can Chiropractic Services Relieve the Pain?

If we feel that you are a suitable candidate for chiropractic services for herniated disc pain relief, we will do the following:

  • Develop an individualized treatment plan that includes adjustments and other techniques.
  • Your treatment plan is determined from a number of factors including; pain, level of activity, and health.

Our chiropractic services provide effective relief to those who suffer low back pain, neck pain, whiplash, sciatica and disc herniation, headaches and migraines, dizziness, work/auto/sports injuries, sprains and strains, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU…?

IT’S 2016!!

New Year, New you!!! What resolutions are you making towards better health?

Studies show having a health partner to keep each other accountable will DOUBLE your chances for success!! Strength in numbers!

Do you have a health buddy?

What about children? Is it ok for them to have New Years Resolutions?

Yes, as long as they are positive and healthy New Year’s Resolutions.

The turning of the calendar can be a prime time for children to focus on forming good new habits. Here are 20 great goals that parents can help pass along.

Parents may make resolutions to save more money, stop smoking or lose weight in the New Year, but what commitments can children make to improve themselves, too? Turns out, there are plenty of age-appropriate targets kids can set to build skills and habits that’ll serve them well into adulthood. Here are some suggestions:

Preschool Children

  • I’ll pick up my toys and put stuff away where it belongs.
  • I’ll brush my teeth twice every day.
  • I won’t tease dogs – even friendly pets. I’ll keep my fingers and face away from their mouths to avoid being bitten.

Big kids and tweens (ages 5-12)

  • I’ll drink milk and water and limit soda and fruit drinks.
  • I’ll put on sunscreen, stay in the shade when I can and wear a brimmed hat and sunglasses – especially playing sports.
  • I’ll try to find a team or individual sport that gets me moving (like soccer or karate) or activity (playing tag, dancing, riding my bike) I like and do it at least three times a week.
  • I’ll wear a helmet when I’m on my bike, scooter or skateboard.
  • I’ll wear my seatbelt every time I’m in a car – or, until I’m tall enough to use a lap/shoulder belt, I’ll sit in the back seat and use a booster seat.
  • I’ll be nice to other kids and friendly to kids who are shy, different or new at school.
  • I’ll never give out personal information online, like my name, home address, school name or phone number – and never send a picture of myself to anyone I chat with on the computer without my mom or dad’s permission.

Teens (13-plus)

  • I’ll eat at least two servings each of fruit and veggies daily – and limit my pop intake to special occasions.
  • I’ll take care of my body with physical activity and nutrition.
  • I’ll watch non-violent TV shows and video games and spend only one to two hours each day, tops, on them.
  • I’ll help my neighborhood by volunteering, helping community groups or by joining an organization that aids others in need.
  • I’ll stop negative self-talk (“I can’t do it,” “I’m so dumb”).
  • When I feel mad or stressed, I’ll take a break and choose positive, constructive ways to deal, like exercising, reading, journaling or talking through problems with a friend or parent.
  • When I have a tough decision, I’ll talk with an adult about my choices.
  • I’ll be careful whom I choose to date. I’ll treat him or her with respect and without coercion or violence – and expect the same.
  • I’ll resist peer pressure to try drugs and alcohol.
  • When I see friends are struggling or engaging in risky behaviors, I’ll talk with a trusted adult and try to find a way to help.

What resolutions have your kids tried? Did they work for them?

The Food & Nutrition Connection to ADD & ADHD

November 12th, 2015 at 6:30 PM

Some Information

Can I help my child with ADD/ADHD with nutrition instead of pharmaceuticals?

Yes you can!!

Supplements and good nutrition are great alternatives. Supplements such as DHA, turmeric and alpha-lipoic acid are some of many options. By cutting sugar, processed foods and simple carbs, healthy nutrition will all play a role in brain function.

Boost your brain by boosting your gut! Food really does matter! Here are some essential keys to keeping gut bacteria balanced:

-Choose foods rich in probiotics, (lacto fermented foods, kefir, eggs, fish)

-Go low carb, embrace high quality fats like coconut oil.

-Choose foods rich in Prebiotics- (fuel for gut bacterial growth) – foods like Chicory, Jerusalem artichoke, garlic, onions, leeks and jicama.

-Drink filtered water

Support Options and how to find everyday balance:

Education

Chiropractic Care

Exercise help

Nutritionists

Muscle Tester

Surround yourself with like- minded people

Unity! Everyone in the family must be on the same page (at least the adults)

Proper Posture and You

Did you know that proper posture is important to the functioning of your spine and nervous system? Improper posture may cause problems over time that you may have never imagined such as pain, joint dysfunction, fatigue, and even arthritis; due to increased stresses on the spine. If you may be wondering how you can improve your own posture, here are some things to start with:

  • Standing up straight
    • Make sure to look up with your head and look down with your eyes instead of looking down with your neck. This will avoid any unnecessary stress on your cervical spine.
    • Your ear holes should line up over the top of your shoulder.
    • For every inch forward your ears are over your shoulders, an extra 12 pounds of pressure is exerted on the muscles in your neck!
  • Sitting
    • Use a chair with a lumbar support to rest your low back on.
    • No lumbar support? No problem, simply place a thin pillow or folded towel in between your low back and the chair to support your spine.
  • Sleeping
    • Try to avoid sleeping on your stomach.
    • Instead, sleep on your side with a pillow the proper height and a pillow in between your legs to keep your spine in the neutral position.
    • You may also sleep on your back with a small pillow or rolled up towel under your neck and knees to keep your head in the neutral position.

To learn more about what you can do to improve your posture with exercises and stretches, come to our next Exercises and Stretches for Proper Posture seminar on March 19th from 6:30-7:30pm located at Family First Chiropractic Center in Blaine, MN. Call 763-404-6244 to sign-up today. Space is limited!

Feeling Fatigued:

Family-First-Chiropractic-Feeling-Fatigued_Blaine-Minnesota_Blog

Feeling Fatigued: Can’t we just PLUG IN?

Feeling alert and energized doesn’t have to feel like a luxury. In today’s bustling and on-the-go way of life, it’s easy to be feeling fatigued and rely on caffeine as a crutch. If your body is feeling fatigued, exhausted and drained, it’s trying to tell you something. When you are squeezing every last drop of energy just to accomplish day-to-day tasks, fatigue treatment can boost your energy levels so you can stay awake for what matters most.

Fatigue

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fatigue (also called exhaustiontirednesslanguidnesslanguorlassitude, and listlessness) is a subjective feeling of tiredness which is distinct from weakness, and has a gradual onset. Unlike weakness, fatigue can be alleviated by periods of rest. Fatigue can have physical or mental causes. Physical fatigue is the transient inability of a muscle to maintain optimal physical performance, and is made more severe by intense physical exercise. Mental fatigue is a transient decrease in maximal cognitive performance resulting from prolonged periods of cognitive activity. It can manifest as somnolencelethargy, or directed attention fatigue.[4]

Medically, fatigue is a non-specific symptom, which means that it has many possible causes. Fatigue is considered a symptom, rather than a sign because it is a subjective feeling reported by the patient, rather than an objective one that can be observed by others. Fatigue and ‘feelings of fatigue’ are often confused.

Daily Energy and Power are resources we just don’t seem to ever have enough of. Why is that? We were made to live 100 years of zest and powerful living, but our bodies are failing us long before that time. A few reasons our lives are cut short could be:

  • Lack of exercise:  A new study from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that diet and inactivity may soon overtake smoking as the leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Lack of proper Nutrition and supplementation: Six of the ten leading causes of death in the United States are linked to a poor diet. Research suggests that childhood nutrition and maternal diet during pregnancy have important long-term effects on health in later life.
  • Lack of proper nerve flow:  Subluxations affect body function and are devastating to your health.
  • Lack of purpose and drive for our life: A sense of purpose and overall zest for life is an essential element of livng longer and happier. In fact, two of the top ten causes of death in the Western world, suicide and alcoholism, are frequently related to this “crisis of meaning.”

Fatigue treatment is crucial for everyday functioning, whether it’s for work or enjoying time with your loved ones. Feeling fatigued, stressed, depressed and out of control only contributes to loss of energy. You don’t have to feel alone and overwhelmed by your inability to get things done; we’ll help you manage your symptoms with the best fatigue treatment in Blaine, Minnesota.

It’s a common misconception that the issue of feeling fatigued will resolve itself on its own. Sometimes, fatigue treatment goes beyond a good night’s sleep. Whether your cause is related to lifestyle, medication or psychological conditions, Family First Chiropractic offers solutions that result in fatigue treatment to re-energize and restore.

The Race of Life

Drive the RACE of life!

Family-First-Chiropractic-Life-is-a-Journey_Blaine-Minnesota_BlogNascar drivers drive the race of their life on the track. They can get up to speeds of 200 miles per hour! Sometimes it feels that our life is a race… a race of time. Does it always feel like we’re chasing time? There never seems to be enough time to get all the things that we need to get done, done. We need more time. We’re running out of time. We wonder if there will EVER be enough time.
That’s why it is important to remember that the most important RACE  is not a race at all. The race of life is actually journey.  Overall, if we step back and really look at it, it shouldn’t even be the “Race of your Life.” This should all be a “Journey of Health.”
Too many people spend their first 40 years of life doing nothing to contribute to their health, and then spend their last 40 wishing they would have. They RACE for the results because time is running out. Don’t be that person. Let us help you win the race at an early age with regular chiropractic!
Life is a journey filled with lessons, hardships, heartaches, joys, celebrations and special moments that will ultimately lead us to our destination: Our purpose in life. The road will not always be smooth; in fact, throughout our travels, we will encounter many challenges. Some of these challenges will test our courage, strengths, weaknesses, and wellness. Along the way, we may stumble upon obstacles that will come between the paths that we are destined to take. In order to follow the right path, we must overcome these obstacles. Sometimes these obstacles are really blessings in disguise, only we don’t realize that at the time. Along our journey we will be confronted with many situations, some will be filled with joy, and some will be filled with heartache. How we react to what we are faced with determines what kind of outcome the rest of our journey through life will be like.
The RACE of life is really a JOURNEY! Come out a WINNER with Chiropractic services!

Have you ever had a health panic attack?

Hitting the PANIC BUTTON with your health:

Family-First-Chiropractic-Health-Panic_Blaine-Minnesota_BlogHave you ever had health anxiety, a health scare, or a health panic attack in your life?

Most likely, you’ve experienced some kind of pain so debilitating that you surely thought “this is the end…” Maybe it was a heart attack, stroke or cancer? Whatever the PANIC button was, almost everyone has had experienced a health panic attack at one point in our lives.  The question is: What did you do with it?

Did you change the path of your health and journey toward wellness? Or, did you fall back into the same, easy routine? Being anxious about our state of health has been increasing steadily over the past few years. Health anxiety is a genuine concern for many people with issues that fundamentally stem from being extremely worried about their state of health. Health scares can prompt some people to share and others to clam up. People react very differently to health scares and health anxiety, but nobody needs to go through these times alone. Making lifestyle changes as a reaction to your health panic attack can make all the difference for your present and future state of being.
It’s time to turn that PANIC into POWER with a few simple, yet effective, changes:
  • Restoring proper nerve function
  • Adding nutritional advice
  • Supplying high quality supplements
  • Special exercise and stretching plan

All of these simple additions to your daily life could be the difference between PANIC and POWER for you. Ask how Family First Chiropractic can help!

Travel the road of Wellness

Help! Help! I need the RIGHT ANSWERS!

Family-First-Chiropractic-Wellness_Blaine-Minnesota_BlogWouldn’t it be “easy” if we all had the right answers to our health and wellness questions? It is easy, in this day and age, to be led astray and taken down the road “more” traveled… instead of the road “less” traveled.

It’s unfortunate, but the road less traveled is the road of WELLNESS. Although times are changing! You see, people are starting to realize that they DO NOT want to spend their first 40 years of doing nothing, and then spend thier last 40-50 years wishing they would have!

Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.  “…a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” – The World Health Organization.  “a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential.” – The National Wellness Institute.  Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth.

Wellness matters because everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our well-being. In turn, our well-being directly affects our actions and emotions. It’s an ongoing circle. Recharging your innate intelligence

They just keep on GOING and GOING and GOING…

How many times have you wished you could keep on going and going and going? If we only had a battery in us that we could replace, or better yet, recharge, then we’d be in business! We’d be super successful in all areas of life because we would never run out of steam.

I am sorry to say that we will never have batteries. However, we have something more powerful and that is an innate power:

Innate Intelligence.

Innate means Inborn, and we were each born with this power instilled in us. It’s power that created us out of one egg and one sperm. It allows us to heal when we are cut, breathe, and digest our food without having to tell our body to do so. We grow new skin, new organs, and so much more, all because of this powerful innate intelligence
Recharge your body by keeping the lines of communication from the brain to the body open and free of interference. By doing so, your INNATE can only get stronger! Stay CHARGED UP with Chiropractic!

Innate intelligence

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Innate Intelligence is a chiropractic term for the supposed organizing properties of living things. It was originally coined by Daniel David Palmer, the founder of chiropractic. This vitalistic concept states that all life contains Innate (inborn) Intelligence and that this force is responsible for the organization, maintenance and healing of the body. Philosophically, chiropractors believe that they remove the interference to the nervous system (by way of a spinal adjustment) and that when the spine is in correct alignment, Innate Intelligence can act, by way of the nervous system, to heal disease within the body. The term is intimately connected with the term Universal Intelligence.

Innate Intelligence, as an explanation for the presence of intelligence in an organism is in conflict with the overwhelmingly scientifically supported evolution by means of natural selectionneuroscience and genetics. Although in its time Innate Intelligence had the great advantage of accounting for the very important presence of intelligence in life, the location of the intelligence, the mode of inscription, the type of transmission, elaboration of this intelligence is not well explained by this vitalistic model or concept.
